The gastronomic excellence of Mugello and the Valle del Diaterna
Flavours of the Valley
The Mugello is a land rich in genuine, traditional produce, the fruit of unspoilt nature and centuries of Apennine farming culture. From chestnuts to mushrooms, from oil to honey, every product tells the story of this land.
Mugello Chestnuts IGP
The Mugello sweet chestnut is the emblem of this land, recognised with PGI status. Gathered in autumn in the valley's vast chestnut groves, it is the star of traditional cakes and classic Apennine recipes.
Porcini Mushrooms
The valley's woods are rich in porcini mushrooms, especially in September and October. Picking them is a traditional activity that draws enthusiasts from across the region, within the local rules.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil
The extra virgin olive oil produced on the hills of the Mugello is prized for its light, fruity taste. The olives are harvested in autumn using traditional methods that preserve the quality of the oil.
Acacia and Chestnut Honey
The local blossom gives the many beekeepers of the area excellent raw material. Chestnut honey, strong and aromatic, and the more delicate acacia honey are among the most prized products.
Cheeses & Cured Meats
The cheese-making and pork-butchering tradition of the Mugello yields matured pecorino cheeses and artisan cured meats of great quality. Prosciutto, finocchiona and sausages are specialities to be enjoyed with Tuscan bread.
Spelt & Ancient Grains
Growing spelt and other ancient grains is a centuries-old tradition of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines. Mugello spelt is used for soups, fresh pasta and baked goods with a genuine, wholesome fragrance.
